COURSE CURRICULUM

The Independent Research module is a core component of the PhD program and represents the primary focus of a candidate's doctoral journey. In this module, PhD candidates engage in a sustained and original investigation into a specific research question or area of interest within their chosen field. Working closely with their appointed academic supervisor or supervisory team, candidates take full responsibility for planning, conducting, and managing their research project. This process involves identifying relevant literature, formulating research objectives, choosing appropriate methodologies, collecting and analysing data, and critically evaluating findings. The module encourages the development of independent thought, intellectual rigour, and scholarly integrity, fostering a high level of academic autonomy and initiative. Regular meetings and communications with supervisors provide structured support, ensuring that the research is progressing in alignment with academic standards and timelines. Through this module, candidates not only contribute new knowledge to their field but also develop transferable skills such as project management, problem-solving, academic writing, and presentation. The culmination of this research is the submission of a substantial doctoral thesis, which is examined through a viva voce, where candidates must defend their work and demonstrate its originality and significance. Ultimately, the Independent Research module plays a critical role in preparing candidates for careers in academia, research, or advanced professional practice.
