COURSE CURRICULUM

The Independent Research module forms the core of the PhD experience, where candidates engage in self-directed, original research under the guidance of a designated supervisor. This module is designed to support students as they develop, refine, and execute a significant research project that contributes new knowledge to the field. Through regular communication with their supervisor, candidates will shape the direction of their study, formulate research questions, and determine appropriate methodologies for data collection and analysis. The process encourages intellectual independence, critical thinking, and scholarly resilience as students navigate the challenges of long-term research.PhD students are expected to engage deeply with existing literature, identify gaps or areas of debate within their discipline, and produce work that is both rigorous and innovative. Supervisory meetings are integral to the development of the research, offering a structured space for feedback, discussion, and progress evaluation. While the research process is largely independent, students are also encouraged to participate in seminars, conferences, and workshops, both within and beyond their academic community, to enhance their knowledge, present their findings, and gain exposure to diverse perspectives.The Independent Research module culminates in the submission of a doctoral thesis, which must demonstrate a significant and original contribution to knowledge and scholarship. This final document is assessed through a formal viva voce examination, where candidates defend their work before a panel of experts. Overall, the module supports the development of high-level academic skills and professional research competence, equipping students for future roles in academia, industry, or policy.
