COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Theatre Directing is structured across Year 1, with an additional Year 2 available for MFA students, and is designed to equip aspiring directors with the skills needed to create innovative theatre for contemporary audiences. In Year 1, students develop a strong foundation in directing through core modules such as Director and the Text, which focuses on interpreting and staging written work, and Contemporary Performance Making, which explores modern and experimental approaches that challenge traditional theatre conventions. Practical creativity is further developed through the Devised Project – Stage and Project Platform – Stage modules, where students collaborate on live performance projects, refining skills in devising, rehearsal processes, and production. Research Methods in Creative Practice supports the development of critical inquiry and reflective practice, while Mental Wealth: Practitioners and Praxis encourages reflection on professional identity, wellbeing, and sustainable creative practice. The program culminates in directing a full performance presented in a professional London theatre, providing valuable industry exposure. MFA students progress to Year 2, where the Professional Platform and Creative Practice modules extend professional development, advanced practice, and industry engagement. Across both years, students also gain essential skills in funding, producing, and marketing, preparing them for successful and sustainable careers in the performing arts.
