COURSE CURRICULUM

The Youth and Community Work program is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical frameworks, policy environments, and practical applications that define professional youth work today. At the heart of the course is the Policy, Theory and Practice in Youth Work module, which introduces students to the critical body of knowledge underpinning informal education. This module encourages students to analyze how theoretical concepts and policy developments impact practical engagement with young people. Complementing this theoretical foundation, the Field Work Practice 1 and Field Work Practice 2 modules are essential components that offer hands-on learning through placements aligned with JNC professional standards. These modules are designed to develop the interpersonal, communicative, and reflective skills necessary for effective youth work. They allow students to directly apply theory in real-world settings, engage with group dynamics, and deepen their critical understanding of informal education. The Community Development, Theory and Practice module extends this practical focus to a broader social context, encouraging students to explore the principles and values of community development. Here, students assess the needs of a specific community and formulate suitable intervention strategies, fostering a strong link between academic learning and societal impact. Finally, the Applied Research Project module enables students to design and carry out a practitioner-led research enquiry within their chosen area of youth and community work. This project is not only an academic exercise but also a means to generate meaningful contributions to the field, offering insights or innovations that can enhance services for young people and communities. Together, these modules create a robust framework for developing competent, reflective, and socially responsible youth workers who are equipped to meet the challenges of contemporary practice.
