COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Surveying and Mapping Sciences with Foundation Year is a specialised degree that provides a thorough grounding in the principles and practices of surveying, geospatial science, and mapping technologies. The course is structured to prepare students for professional roles in land, engineering, and marine surveying, with a focus on practical skills, digital technologies, and legal frameworks. In the foundation year, students develop core competencies in mathematics, science, computing, and academic skills that support their transition into higher education. Modules such as Analytical Mathematics, Engineering Sciences, and Introduction to Computing help students build the essential knowledge required for engineering and surveying disciplines. In the first year of the degree, students are introduced to the built environment, surveying techniques, and GIS mapping. Practical experience is developed through modules like Land and Construction Surveying and GIS & Mapping, which include fieldwork activities that simulate real-world applications. As students progress into the second year, they explore more advanced topics such as Engineering Surveying, 3D Data Modelling, and GNSS and Reference Systems. These modules emphasize solving complex spatial problems using the latest surveying technologies. An employment internship further strengthens practical skills and industry awareness. In the final year, students engage with high-level topics including Sea Surveying, Land Law and Registration, and Professional Geospatial Practice. The Capstone Project allows students to carry out independent research in a specialist area of interest. Throughout the program, the Mental Wealth modules develop students’ professional skills in project management, ethics, teamwork, and digital literacy, ensuring they are prepared for the challenges of the surveying industry.
