The Sport, Physical Education and Development program offers a comprehensive academic and professional journey beginning with a foundation year that equips students with essential skills in anatomy, psychology, communication, and coaching. This initial stage builds a solid base in academic writing, professional development, and the fundamentals of sports coaching and development. In the first year of the degree, students delve deeper into the human body's functioning, psychological influences on performance, coaching principles, sport evolution, and leadership in sports organisations. Modules aim to establish both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, ensuring students are prepared for higher-level learning. By the second year, the focus shifts to more specific skills needed for effective teaching and coaching, with an emphasis on inclusion, disability in sport, policy understanding, and community engagement. Students explore the sociological and psychological factors influencing participation and access to sport while also developing research and critical thinking skills through targeted modules. The third year allows students to specialize and apply their knowledge through an independent or applied research project and a structured work placement. They engage with modules that investigate children's health and wellbeing, advanced teaching practices, and employability preparation, ensuring readiness for both further education and the professional sports industry. Opportunities to work with real-world partners like West Ham United and local schools provide valuable hands-on experience.
