COURSE CURRICULUM
The Psychology degree with a Foundation Year is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the field, starting with a solid foundation in key academic and practical skills. The foundation year includes three core modules: Personal Development (Mental Wealth), Psychology in the Everyday, and Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology. In addition to these, students can choose between two optional modules—Topics in Psychology or Topics in Counselling. These options allow students to tailor their early academic experience, whether they are interested in broadening their psychology knowledge or exploring a potential future in counselling. Upon successful completion of the foundation year, students progress to the full BSc (Hons) Psychology degree or one of its specialist pathways. The first year of the degree (Level 4) introduces six core modules, including Mental Wealth, which focuses on developing critical thinking and professional communication skills. Other modules cover key areas of psychology, such as biological, cognitive, developmental, and social psychology, alongside research skills related to both small and large sample methodologies. In the second year (Level 5), students dive deeper into psychological research methods and explore topics like individual differences, cognitive psychology, and the application of psychobiology and social psychology. The Work-Based Learning module provides practical experience, helping students connect academic knowledge to real-world settings. Additionally, students can choose from optional modules such as Forensic Psychology or Positive Psychology Coaching, which allow them to specialise in areas of interest. The final year (Level 6) focuses on independent research through the Psychology Research Project, where students complete an empirical study. Specialised optional modules offer further opportunities for career-focused learning in areas like addiction psychology, criminal behaviour, and health and wellbeing. This well-rounded structure ensures that students are fully prepared for both professional and academic success in the field of psychology.
