COURSE CURRICULUM

In the Psychology Foundation Year, students are introduced to a range of core modules designed to build a solid foundation for further study in psychology. The key modules include Personal Development, which focuses on enhancing reflective abilities, interpersonal skills, and autonomous thinking, and Psychology in the Everyday, which applies psychological theories to real-world issues. The Introduction to Research Methods module introduces essential research techniques, while Key Studies in Psychology familiarizes students with influential psychological studies. The Introduction to Counselling Skills module provides basic counselling techniques and prepares students for careers in psychology or related fields. Additionally, Introduction to Academic Practice equips students with essential academic and transferable skills for university-level study. Students can choose between the Topics in Counselling module, which prepares them for a BACP-accredited Counselling degree, and the Topics in Psychology module, which serves as an introduction to the BSc Psychology programs.In the first year of the BSc Psychology with Child Development program, students develop a deeper understanding of psychology, with a particular focus on child development and research skills. Key modules such as Thinking Like a Psychologist help develop critical thinking and presentation skills, while Introduction to Cognitive and Developmental Psychology explores cognitive processes like memory and attention, and their role in development. The Psychology in Applied Contexts module introduces students to the practical application of psychology in professional roles. Researching with Small and Larger Samples allows students to explore different research methods and their application in various settings.Year two further expands students' understanding of psychology, covering topics such as Individual Differences and Applications, Psychological Research Methods, and Applications of Psychobiology and Social Psychology. Students also gain practical experience through Work-Based Learning in Psychology, which helps them connect academic theory with real-world practice.In the final year, students focus on specialized child development research projects and advanced topics. Modules such as Psychology in Communication and Social Engagement develop communication skills, while Developmental Psychology Research Project allows students to conduct independent research. The Advanced Developmental Psychology module deepens students' understanding of key factors that shape development across various domains. This comprehensive approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared for careers in child psychology and related fields.
