COURSE CURRICULUM

The psychology foundation year is designed to introduce students to key psychological concepts and research skills, ensuring a smooth transition into the undergraduate degree. It begins with modules that build a broad understanding of psychology and its relevance in daily life. Students are encouraged to explore how psychological theory applies to real-world issues in the Psychology in the Everyday module, while the Introduction to Research Methods module teaches the fundamentals of designing and conducting psychological studies. Personal development is also a focus, with a Mental Wealth module helping students build reflective thinking, interpersonal skills, and a deeper connection with the discipline. The foundation year also includes counselling skills training, introducing students to core counselling theories, ethics, and communication techniques. This hands-on module encourages personal and professional development through practical work and peer feedback. To support academic success, a dedicated module on academic practice helps students strengthen critical reading, writing, and presentation skills essential for higher education. Upon progression to year one of the psychology degree, students begin to explore core areas of psychology, including cognitive, biological, developmental, and social psychology, as well as individual differences and research methods. Modules such as Thinking Like a Psychologist and Psychology in Applied Contexts help students understand the real-world relevance of psychological knowledge and begin to develop employability skills. As students advance to years two and three, they are given opportunities to specialise in forensic and criminal psychology. These modules explore how mental health and behaviour intersect with the legal system and prepare students for research and practice in applied settings. The final year culminates in an independent forensic research project and advanced study of offending behaviour, rehabilitation, and the psychologist’s role in criminal justice. Together, these stages create a well-rounded education for aspiring psychologists.
