COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Chemistry with Foundation Year is a structured and supportive program designed to prepare students for academic success and future employment in the chemical sciences. The foundation year equips students with essential skills in academic writing, critical thinking, mathematics, and information technology while introducing fundamental scientific knowledge through modules such as Human Biology, Chemistry of Life, and Introduction to the Study of Cells. These topics provide a solid base in biology and chemistry, helping students transition effectively into the full undergraduate degree.In the first year of the degree, students develop a strong foundation in core areas of chemistry, including organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. Alongside these, the course introduces key mathematical techniques and laboratory skills essential for conducting scientific research. The Professional Practice in Science module helps students build confidence in digital literacy, communication, and teamwork—skills that are crucial for both academic progress and professional development.During the second year, students advance their knowledge through more specialised modules such as Advanced Topics in Analytical Chemistry, Topics in Environmental and Green Chemistry, and Organic Mechanisms of Synthesis. These modules provide hands-on experience with industry-relevant techniques and explore how chemistry can address real-world challenges, including environmental sustainability and drug development. The Research and Career Development module supports students in building scientific literacy, research capability, and employability.In the final year, the focus shifts to advanced and applied chemistry. Modules such as Natural Products and Discovery, Bioinorganic Chemistry, and Application of Analytical Techniques in Pharmaceutical Quality Control deepen students' expertise. Students also undertake an independent research project and compile a career enhancement portfolio, demonstrating their readiness for employment or further study. Optional modules allow for specialisation in areas like medicinal chemistry and proteomics. Throughout the course, optional short work placements offer valuable real-world experience, enhancing graduate employability across sectors including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare, and research.
