The BSc (Hons) Architectural Design Technology degree offers a practical and multidisciplinary route into the world of architectural design, blending architecture, engineering, building technology, and construction management. Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the course is designed to reflect the realities of industry through hands-on learning, collaborative projects, and cutting-edge digital tools. The course begins with a Foundation Year for those who need to build a strong base in design thinking and architectural principles. During this year, students explore various design techniques, experiment with media, and begin developing a creative portfolio while also examining the historical and theoretical context of architecture. As students progress into the first year of the degree, they gain practical experience through design-based projects, develop technical drawing skills, and learn how to manage a project from concept to completion. The course takes a hands-on approach, with access to workshops equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and robotic arms, along with software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, and simulation tools like IES and Design Builder. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of construction technology, project costing, legal frameworks, and environmental design integration. They are also encouraged to seek industry placements and engage in live projects. The final year focuses on independent design work, critical research, and the integration of technical and environmental knowledge into comprehensive project solutions. Students refine their project management skills and explore advanced topics in material use and sustainability. Throughout the degree, personal and professional development is embedded through the Mental Wealth modules, which focus on emotional intelligence, career readiness, and well-being. By graduation, students are equipped with the design, technical, and professional skills needed for a successful career in architecture or further postgraduate study in the built environment sector.
