COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Pharmaceutical Science degree at UEL, students are introduced to the core principles of organic chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, and human anatomy, which form the foundation for more advanced study in the field. The course is designed to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory skills, allowing students to develop a solid understanding of how biological and chemical systems interact, particularly in relation to drug development. Modules such as Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry and Introduction to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology provide a comprehensive introduction to key concepts such as drug synthesis, metabolism, and the structure of biological molecules.The Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery modules focus on developing practical skills in chemical analysis, quality control, and drug formulation, which are crucial in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, the Infection & Immunity and Fundamental & Experimental Pharmacology modules lay the groundwork for understanding the biological mechanisms of diseases and how pharmacological agents can be used to treat them. Furthermore, the Drug, Discovery, Development and Regulation module introduces students to the processes involved in bringing a new drug to market, from early-stage research to regulatory approval.In Year 2, students deepen their knowledge of drug development and learn to apply their understanding in laboratory settings. They also have the opportunity to develop professional competencies through research projects and optional work placements. By the final year, students focus on advanced topics such as Natural Products and Discovery, Medicinal Chemistry, and Biopharmaceuticals, while engaging in an independent research project that allows them to specialize in an area of interest. The comprehensive curriculum ensures graduates are well-prepared for careers in the pharmaceutical industry, research, and related fields.
