COURSE CURRICULUM

The psychology degree with a forensic focus provides a comprehensive understanding of human behaviour through the lens of scientific research and applied practice. In the first year, students gain a strong foundation in key areas of psychology such as biological, cognitive, social, and developmental psychology. Modules introduce essential research skills for both small and large sample studies and explore real-world applications of psychological principles. A distinctive feature of the first year is the Mental Wealth module, which supports students in developing critical thinking, communication skills, and digital literacy, all essential for both academic success and future employability. As students progress into the second year, the curriculum allows for a more applied focus. They explore how individual differences affect behaviour, and they engage with real-life applications of psychobiology and social psychology. More advanced research methods are introduced to prepare students for the independent project in their final year. The second-year Mental Wealth module includes work-based learning, offering students the chance to gain professional experience and reflect on their career aspirations. By the third year, the focus sharpens on forensic and criminal psychology. Students undertake a major independent research project in forensic psychology and explore complex issues such as different types of offending behaviour, rehabilitation, and the role of psychologists in the justice system. The final modules develop students’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to forensic settings, critically engage with research, and consider ethical implications. By the end of the course, students are equipped with the academic knowledge, research experience, and professional skills needed for careers in forensic psychology or postgraduate study. The course’s structure promotes a gradual and thorough development of expertise, starting from core psychological principles and culminating in focused, applied forensic study.
