COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Counselling program provides a comprehensive and structured pathway to becoming a professional counsellor, beginning with foundational knowledge and progressing to advanced clinical practice. In Year 1, students are introduced to essential counselling skills and theoretical frameworks through modules like Core Counselling Skills and Processes and Person-Centred Counselling. These modules focus on developing empathy, active listening, and ethical awareness, all of which are essential qualities for any practising counsellor. Complementing these are academic skills modules, including Researching with Small Samples and Mathematical Applications, which build the ability to engage with research and analyse psychological data. Personal and professional development is also emphasised through Mental Wealth modules, which cultivate emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and interpersonal effectiveness. In Year 2, students build on this foundation by engaging with more complex therapeutic approaches such as Psychodynamic Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). These modules deepen students’ understanding of the therapeutic relationship, psychological theories, and client development across the lifespan. Reflective practice becomes central at this stage, with the Becoming a Reflective Practitioner module preparing students for clinical placements by encouraging self-examination, ethical decision-making, and skills development within a supervised peer setting. Research skills are further enhanced in a dedicated Research Methods module that equips students with tools to plan, conduct, and evaluate ethical counselling research.By the final year, students are ready to apply their knowledge in real-world settings through Clinical Practice and Supervision and Becoming a Competent Practitioner modules. They are trained to manage a caseload, formulate treatment plans, and engage in clinical supervision while maintaining ethical standards. A final year research dissertation allows for in-depth exploration of a chosen counselling topic. The course culminates with integrative training and optional specialisation in areas such as Existential Counselling, preparing students to develop their unique therapeutic identity and enter the profession as competent, reflective, and ethical practitioners.
