COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Education and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is a unique three-year degree that combines in-depth computer science education with professional teacher training, allowing students to graduate as qualified secondary school teachers. Delivered by the University of East London, this program provides a direct pathway into teaching without the need for a postgraduate qualification such as a PGCE. Throughout the course, students gain a strong foundation in key technical areas including software development, computer systems, programming, databases, data science, artificial intelligence, and web and mobile application development. These subjects are taught alongside education-focused modules that help students understand teaching theory, classroom management, and how to support pupil learning effectively.From the first year, students take part in regular school-based training, which gradually increases in complexity and responsibility. By the final year, students are expected to teach whole classes independently during a 12-week school placement. Education modules such as Computer Science Teaching and Learning, Researching Computer Science Learning, and Active Inquiry are designed to equip students with the skills to plan structured lessons, address common misconceptions, and meet the needs of diverse learners. At the same time, technical modules including Advanced Programming, Data Communications and Networks, and Web and Mobile App Development help students strengthen their computing skills and apply them in educational contexts.The course places a strong emphasis on reflective practice, critical thinking, and the ability to use research to inform teaching. Students also complete a major individual project that combines their computing and educational knowledge. By the end of the degree, graduates are well-prepared to begin their careers as computer science teachers, with a deep understanding of both the technical content and how to effectively communicate it to learners in a secondary school environment.
