COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biochemistry and Biotechnology degree at UEL offers a comprehensive and practical approach to one of science’s most innovative fields. In the first year, students establish a strong foundation through modules in cell biology, organic chemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology, learning key lab techniques and gaining insights into biological systems. The curriculum also includes a mental wealth module to support academic transitions and build essential professional skills. In the second year, the program advances into more applied and theoretical concepts such as infection and immunity, molecular biology and genetics, and principles of biotechnology. Students gain experience in techniques like recombinant DNA technology, enzyme analysis, and organic synthesis, while continuing to develop research and career competencies. The final year places a strong focus on real-world application and independent research. Students conduct a research project and complete a career enhancement portfolio, supported by modules in bioinformatics, protein biochemistry, and biopharmaceuticals. Core subjects explore advances in biotechnology such as gene therapy, GMOs, and the development of protein-based medicines. Optional modules like Clinical Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Natural Products and Discovery allow for specialisation based on personal interest or career goals. Opportunities for short work placements are available at both level 4 and level 6, providing professional experience that enhances employability. The program equips students with both a deep theoretical understanding and practical skills in modern biosciences, preparing them for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, research, or further academic study.
