COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) General Engineering degree is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and multidisciplinary foundation in engineering, preparing them for a wide range of career opportunities across various sectors. The course begins with an optional foundation year that develops essential knowledge in mathematics, sciences, and computing, supporting students in their transition to degree-level study. Throughout the program, students build strong technical and analytical skills, focusing on core engineering principles such as mechanics, thermofluids, electronics, control systems, and materials science. Each year of study is carefully structured to blend theoretical learning with practical application. The first year introduces key concepts in dynamics, electromechanical systems, fluid mechanics, and engineering mathematics. In the second year, students explore more advanced topics, including applied mechanics, quality engineering, water engineering, and finite element analysis, while developing teamwork, communication, and project planning skills through interdisciplinary group projects. The final year emphasises professional practice, innovation, and independent research. Students undertake a capstone project, where they investigate a real-world engineering problem and apply their cumulative knowledge to deliver a solution. They also gain insight into advanced manufacturing, systems integration, turbomachinery, and sustainability in engineering. Industry engagement is a key feature of the program, with input from organisations such as Atkins, WSP, and Morrish helping to shape the curriculum. Students are encouraged to take part in national and international competitions including the IMechE Design Challenge, Formula Student, and Shell Eco-Marathon, gaining valuable experience and exposure to real engineering challenges. Mental Wealth modules run throughout the course, focusing on professional development, leadership, and the skills needed to thrive in the modern engineering workplace. Graduates leave the program with a broad and adaptable skillset, capable of pursuing careers in mechanical, civil, electrical, or systems engineering, or progressing into further study or professional accreditation.
