COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree, including the foundation year, is designed to provide a comprehensive and practical education that prepares students for a successful career in civil engineering. The foundation year focuses on core subjects such as mathematics, computing, and physical sciences. It introduces essential engineering principles and problem-solving techniques that ensure students are well-prepared for the academic demands of the degree. As students progress into the first year, the course builds foundational knowledge in engineering mechanics, thermofluids, and surveying, while also developing analytical and technical skills essential for tackling real-world engineering challenges. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning through practical lab work, field exercises, and the use of modern engineering tools. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of core civil engineering topics, including structural analysis, ground engineering, and water engineering. This stage of the course introduces more advanced mathematical modelling and includes residential fieldwork, giving students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. Emphasis is placed on the importance of accurate measurement, structural behavior, and sustainable design. Throughout the program, students engage with modules designed to enhance professional development, covering topics such as communication, teamwork, leadership, and career planning. In the final year, the course prepares students for graduate-level roles by focusing on complex problem-solving, critical thinking, and the integration of civil engineering knowledge into larger projects. Students complete a capstone project that allows them to demonstrate their expertise through independent research and analysis. Advanced modules in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, and transport infrastructure engineering ensure a well-rounded understanding of the discipline. The degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, providing a pathway to Incorporated Engineer status and partial fulfilment of Chartered Engineer requirements. Graduates leave with a strong blend of academic, technical, and professional skills, ready to contribute to infrastructure development and innovation.
