COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) program offers a comprehensive and structured pathway for students aiming to pursue careers in healthcare, diagnostics, or medical research. Beginning with an optional foundation year, the course builds essential academic, scientific, and professional skills through modules that cover human biology, cell structure, chemistry, and core communication and IT skills. In the first year of the degree, students develop foundational knowledge in chemistry, cell biology, anatomy, physiology, and microbiology, supported by laboratory-based learning and mental wealth modules that promote personal development and employability. As students progress into the second year, the focus shifts towards understanding disease processes, clinical diagnostics, infection control, molecular biology, and immunology. Practical training is reinforced through hands-on laboratory sessions, and students learn about ethical and regulatory standards relevant to biomedical practice. In the final year, students deepen their knowledge in specialised areas such as clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, cellular pathology, clinical immunology, and genetics. They also undertake an independent research project, allowing them to demonstrate critical thinking, data analysis, and scientific communication skills. Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on laboratory skills, research competence, and career readiness. The integration of Mental Wealth modules across all levels ensures that students build emotional intelligence, teamwork, and professional skills alongside academic knowledge. Optional short work placements in each year offer opportunities to gain real-world experience, make professional contacts, and enhance employability. By the end of the program, graduates are equipped with the theoretical understanding and practical expertise needed to work effectively in NHS and private laboratories or to pursue further study and professional registration as biomedical scientists. This course combines scientific rigour with a clear focus on applied clinical skills, preparing students to make meaningful contributions to patient care, diagnostics, and public health.
