COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Railway Engineering program provides a comprehensive education in the design, construction, operation, and management of railway systems. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in key engineering areas such as material properties, fluid mechanics, and engineering mechanics. These core modules, including Mental Wealth: Engineering Profession 1, Engineering Materials, and Engineering Principles, help students develop critical thinking, mathematical, and technical skills, setting the stage for more advanced topics in later years. The curriculum also emphasizes the social and environmental impacts of engineering, encouraging students to understand their roles in addressing contemporary challenges.In the second year, students delve deeper into specialized railway engineering topics. Modules such as Engineering Design and Analysis and Dynamics and Control help students master sophisticated design techniques, including failure analysis and feedback control, both essential for railway system reliability and performance. The focus on applied mechanics further strengthens students' understanding of structural behavior and the use of finite element analysis in engineering design. The optional industry placement in the second year offers valuable hands-on experience, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world projects and gain insights into the professional environment.In the final year, students complete a capstone project that consolidates their learning. This project allows them to explore a specific area of railway engineering in depth, integrating the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout the program. Additionally, modules such as Turbomachinery and Energy Systems and Transport Infrastructure Engineering prepare students for the growing emphasis on sustainability and modern energy solutions in the railway industry.
