COURSE CURRICULUM

In the biomedical science degree program, you will develop the knowledge and skills needed to understand, investigate, and treat disease from both a scientific and clinical perspective. The course begins with a strong foundation in core subjects such as chemistry, cell biology, microbiology, anatomy, and physiology. In the first year, you will also gain essential laboratory skills, data analysis techniques, and a grounding in personal and professional development through mental wealth modules. These foundational studies prepare you for more advanced and specialised topics in the second year, where you’ll explore the mechanisms of disease, molecular biology, genetics, infection, and immunity. Practical laboratory sessions support the theory and provide the experience needed for clinical settings. You will also be introduced to haematology and transfusion science, which are crucial areas in hospital diagnostics. In your final year, the focus shifts to clinical applications, including modules on cellular pathology, clinical immunology, medical microbiology, and clinical biochemistry. You will also examine the impact of genetics on disease and treatment through the study of clinical genetics. A major part of your final year includes an independent research project, where you will investigate a biomedical topic either through lab-based experiments or library research, alongside a career development portfolio that helps prepare you for professional employment. Optional short work placements are available throughout the course to give you real-world experience and help build professional networks. This degree is designed to equip you with the scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and transferable skills required to pursue a successful career as a biomedical scientist or in related bioscience fields, whether in the NHS, private laboratories, or further postgraduate study.
