COURSE CURRICULUM

The Product Design program is structured to support a student’s development from foundational design knowledge to independent, professional-level practice. In the first year, students are introduced to the essential tools, techniques, and methods used in both two- and three-dimensional design. Emphasis is placed on building creative confidence through hands-on exploration of materials and media while developing critical thinking, teamwork, and safe workshop practices. Modules like Techniques for Designing, Design Project, Art and Design Workshop, and Design Media establish a solid base in design processes and communication. Supporting modules in History and Theory and Professional Life encourage reflective learning and introduce students to the wider cultural and theoretical context of design. In the second year, the program deepens students' ability to create thoughtful, innovative design solutions by emphasizing user-centred design, environmental considerations, and collaboration. Core modules such as Design Investigation 2, Design Resolution 2, and Design Integration 2 build advanced project development skills, while Material Integration 2 continues to enhance understanding of materiality. Professional Life and History and Theory modules support students in preparing for the design industry through practical experience and critical analysis. In the third year, students are expected to demonstrate an integrated and mature approach to design, incorporating technical, cultural, and environmental knowledge into their work. Modules such as Design Investigation 3, Design Resolution 3, and Design Integration 3 allow students to work on self-directed projects that reflect their personal interests and professional goals. Material Integration 3 and the final History and Theory module support this with advanced research and detailed technical exploration. The final Professional Life module ensures students are prepared for employment or further study, emphasizing professional responsibilities, industry standards, and reflective practice.
