COURSE CURRICULUM

In the foundation year of the Politics and International Relations degree, students explore essential sociological and political concepts, such as community identity, social justice, and crime. They engage with topics like digital sociology, globalisation, and the psychosocial approach to the body, providing them with practical experiences through field trips and external visits. This year emphasizes developing critical thinking, research skills, and professional competencies necessary for careers in politics and international relations.The "Knowledge, Skills, Practice and the Self: Mental Wealth Core Module" helps students build employability by focusing on the importance of skills, competencies, and experience (SCE) beyond academic assessment. The module introduces concepts such as ‘de-skilling,’ ‘re-skilling,’ and the digital divide, alongside enhancing technological literacy and social media awareness.The "Exploring Communities as Social Scientists Core Module" broadens understanding of local and global communities by examining sociological concepts of community, identity, place, social memory, and migration. Students apply these ideas through a guided walk of a London neighbourhood and visits to museums, strengthening their academic skills and future career prospects.In the "Researching Changing Communities Core Module," students investigate how communities evolve over time, both geographically and culturally. The module allows students to carry out a small research project, drawing on semi-structured interviews and secondary research, while applying sociological theories to contemporary issues such as crime, surveillance, and globalization."Reimagining the Work of a Social Scientist Core Module" exposes students to the real-world contexts in which social science knowledge is applied, through visits to community organizations, NGOs, and professional institutions. These experiences help students develop professional communication skills and cultural capital for future careers.The foundation year also includes core modules such as "Becoming an Activist," "Politics," "Global Political Economy," "The Mess We Are In (And How We Got Here)," and "International Relations," all designed to provide a strong base for the political and social challenges addressed throughout the degree program. These modules provide essential conceptual tools for understanding political practice, public policy, global economic systems, and contemporary global crises.
