The BA (Hons) Illustration and Animation with Foundation Year is a comprehensive degree that develops both the creative and professional skills necessary for a career in the visual arts. In the first year of the undergraduate degree, students gain essential knowledge through modules such as Contextual Studies, Practice, and Experimentation and Application. Students also begin to explore the connections between theory and practice, while building core competencies in drawing, animation, and design. The second year advances these skills through a deeper focus on individual style, technical ability, and critical thinking. Core modules like Advanced Practice and Advanced Experimentation promote personal risk-taking and creative exploration. Research into Practice and Contextual Studies support theoretical understanding, while Professional Life modules provide opportunities to engage with industry briefs, team collaboration, and reflective practice. By the final year, students are expected to take full ownership of their creative direction. Independent Major Projects form the backbone of the third year, culminating in a public exhibition. Students choose a research pathway that allows them to either work independently or contribute to a group research project, linking theoretical enquiry to studio outcomes. Professional development is further supported through opportunities to lead live projects, mentor junior peers, and participate in competitions and exhibitions.
