COURSE CURRICULUM

The Education Studies with Foundation Year program at the University of East London offers a comprehensive and structured pathway for students interested in early childhood, special needs, and education. The foundation year introduces key concepts in these areas while helping students build essential academic, digital, and professional skills. Modules such as Introduction to Early Childhood, Special Needs and Education, Social, Emotional and Mental Health, and Placements in Context provide an early understanding of children’s learning and development, behaviour support, and educational environments. Students also begin to develop their academic writing, research abilities, and reflective thinking, setting a strong base for degree-level study. As students progress into the first year, they explore core disciplines like sociology and philosophy of education, as well as key topics such as inclusion, diversity, and social justice. Modules like Exploring Social Worlds and Key Principles for Inclusion encourage critical analysis of educational inequality and the experiences of different groups. Students also begin developing research skills and participate in collaborative research activities. The second year deepens this learning by focusing on contemporary educational issues, policy, and the development of personal identity and professional skills. Students strengthen their research abilities through the Building Research Communities module and engage more closely with real-world issues in modules like Identity and Social Justice. In the final year, students apply their learning through an independent research project and community-based experiences.
