COURSE CURRICULUM
This comprehensive Law and Criminology degree with a foundation year is designed to equip students with a thorough understanding of legal principles and criminological theories, while also developing academic, analytical, and practical skills. In the foundation year, students are introduced to core legal concepts, legal methods, and digital sociology, alongside modules exploring crime, surveillance, and globalisation. These early studies provide essential context and skills for higher education learning. In the first year of the main program, the focus shifts to key areas such as the criminal justice process, public law, and the relationship between crime and punishment, offering insights into the legal system and societal responses to crime. The second year builds on this foundation with in-depth study of criminal law, human rights, crime policy, and the historical development of crime and punishment. Students also examine modern policing and critical perspectives on justice. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project and choose from a wide range of optional modules to tailor the degree to their interests and career goals. These options include specialist topics such as cybercrime, race and justice, psychological criminology, and various branches of law including family, employment, and commercial law. Modules like Clinical Legal Education and Work-Based Learning provide hands-on experience, while the Mental Wealth series helps develop professional, ethical, and leadership skills. Throughout the course, students engage with real-world issues through case studies, legal simulations, field visits, and reflective projects. The program’s interdisciplinary approach blends sociology, law, and criminology, preparing graduates for diverse roles in legal practice, criminal justice, policy development, or further professional study. By combining academic theory with practical application and ethical reflection, the course aims to produce well-rounded, employable graduates with a strong understanding of how law and crime intersect in contemporary society.
