COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sports Journalism degree is a comprehensive and practical program designed to prepare students for careers across the sports media industry. In the first year, students gain essential journalistic skills including news writing, editing, photography, audio and video production, as well as an understanding of media law, ethics, and regulation. They begin creating content for multiple platforms and contribute to Rising East, the university's live news outlet, to develop hands-on newsroom experience. The second year focuses on deepening industry knowledge through reporting live sports events, conducting interviews, exploring the business and political aspects of sport, and producing data-driven journalism. Students enhance their digital and multimedia skills while building a professional portfolio and preparing for work placements. Modules also focus on employability and entrepreneurship, helping students understand the media landscape and develop an online presence. By this stage, students operate as beat reporters for Rising East, publishing content regularly and managing editorial responsibilities. In the final year, students refine their journalistic expertise through leadership roles within Rising East, acting as section editors responsible for commissioning and editing content, coordinating production schedules, and promoting publications. Modules cover advanced storytelling techniques using data and visualisation, the relationship between politics and sport, and editorial aesthetics. Students undertake a final major project that may be practical or research-based, applying all the skills and knowledge they have gained throughout the course. Across all three years, the program places strong emphasis on real-world learning, critical thinking, and professional development through the Mental Wealth modules, which support students in enhancing their personal and professional competencies. By the end of the degree, graduates have a robust portfolio, real newsroom experience, and the confidence to pursue roles in digital, print, television, or radio journalism, equipped with the practical skills and industry insight necessary to succeed in a fast-paced and evolving media environment.
