COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Special Education program, students engage in six core modules designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of children's development, inclusion, and research skills. The Mental Wealth module focuses on enhancing personal and professional skills, including emotional, social, and cognitive intelligence, through workshops and reflective activities. The Exploring Social Worlds module delves into the sociocultural experiences of children, fostering an understanding of children's rights and how to support their needs in various contexts. The Key Principles for Inclusion and Diversity module offers a critical review of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), examining the historical development, legislative frameworks, and debates surrounding disability and inclusion. In Emerging Research Communities, students are introduced to research methods and the process of engaging in critical thinking and problem-solving, fostering an academic community. The Practice modules, both Part 1 and Part 2, provide opportunities for students to explore developmental theories and pedagogical approaches while applying them in real-world early childhood settings. In the second year, students build upon these foundational skills with modules like Mental Wealth: Academic and Professional Skills for Life 2, which further develops competencies for career progression. Identity and Social Justice focuses on understanding the social and political factors affecting children, while Building Research Communities deepens research skills through collaborative projects and ethical inquiry. The Specific Learning Difficulties module offers a focused examination of conditions like dyslexia and ADHD, providing practical approaches for supporting learners with specific needs. SEND Careers prepares students for professional pathways in education, emphasizing employability skills and career planning. The final year of the program integrates professional experience, with modules such as the Independent Research Project, where students initiate a research study on a relevant educational issue, and Communication and Interaction, which explores autism spectrum disorders and the teaching strategies needed to support children with ASD. Through a combination of theoretical learning, practical experience, and research, students are equipped to enter the workforce with in-depth knowledge and skills in special education.
