COURSE CURRICULUM

The Primary Education with QTS (BSc Hons) degree prepares you for a successful career in teaching by developing essential teaching skills across various core modules. These modules cover crucial areas such as child development, applied pedagogy, classroom management, and subject-specific courses in English and Mathematics for EYFS, KS1, and KS2. The degree is structured to combine theory and practical experience, ensuring that you are equipped to create engaging and inclusive learning environments, manage classrooms effectively, and inspire students to reach their full potential.In the first year, you will start with foundational modules such as Child Development, Applied Pedagogy and Classroom Management, which will introduce you to different pedagogical approaches and classroom management techniques that support students with diverse needs, including those with English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). You will also gain knowledge through modules such as English Teaching in Primary Education and Mathematics Teaching in Primary Education, which cover subject-specific pedagogies for teaching English and mathematics in primary schools.Throughout your studies, you will engage in practical placements through the School Based Training modules. These placements provide you with the opportunity to apply your learning in real school settings, enhancing your professional development and reflective practice. School Based Training 1a focuses on emotional intelligence, reflective skills, and entrepreneurial abilities, while School Based Training 1b focuses on articulating professional learning gained during your second placement.As you progress to the second year, you will deepen your expertise with modules such as Curriculum Subject Knowledge: Professional Development and Curriculum Subject Knowledge: Policy Development, where you will explore the subject knowledge needed for teaching subjects like Science, Computing, Humanities, and PE. Additionally, you will examine effective assessment strategies in the Assessment in Primary Education module, which equips you to assess children's academic progress in alignment with UK educational practices.In your final year, you will refine your professional skills with advanced modules like Values-based Teaching, which critically examines the statutory requirements for teaching, and Wider School Life, focusing on governance, safeguarding, and school leadership. You will also undertake a Specialist Applied Project, allowing you to conduct in-depth research on a teaching and learning topic of your choice. The final placement, School Based Training 3a and 3b, ensures that you are a confident, reflective practitioner ready to step into a primary school classroom.
