COURSE CURRICULUM

The politics and international relations degree provides a comprehensive foundation in understanding global dynamics, political theory, and public policy. The first year is designed to equip students with essential knowledge in political theory, public policy, and global political economy, all while fostering critical thinking about contemporary global issues. Students are introduced to the complexities of global crises, including economic, political, ecological, and emotional challenges, and are encouraged to consider the historical contexts of empire and colonialism. A key module in the first year focuses on political participation and activism, preparing students to engage as active citizens and make meaningful contributions to policy-making processes. In the second year, the curriculum deepens the exploration of global governance and power dynamics, offering modules on the role of international organizations like the United Nations, as well as the impact of great power politics, migration, and environmental justice. The study of space, bodies, and power is introduced, which examines issues of inequality, social justice, and the politics of identity, while also addressing the role of surveillance and colonial legacies. The third year advances students' knowledge further, with modules on gendered power relations, European politics, and African politics. The final year emphasizes the practical application of academic knowledge through placements, allowing students to gain real-world experience. Additionally, the Applied Research Project offers students the opportunity to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice, consolidating their learning. By the end of the degree, students are equipped with the skills necessary for professional roles in politics, international relations, public policy, and social development, having gained theoretical insights, practical experience, and research skills that will serve them in their careers.
