COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the BA (Hons) Interior Architecture program, students begin their journey by building a strong foundation in spatial design. This stage focuses on materials, techniques, and representation methods, allowing students to explore various ways to express and communicate design ideas. Through hands-on projects and experimentation, they learn how to create imaginative and technically sound design proposals, balancing aesthetic appeal with practical considerations. The curriculum emphasizes the development of critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to effectively communicate ideas. Core modules such as Design Investigation 1 introduce students to key processes involved in spatial design, including model fabrication, drawing, and mixed media representations. This year also encourages students to engage in trial and error, helping them build confidence and competence in the design process. Additionally, the Design Resolution 1 module enables students to produce design proposals that respond to different sites and briefs, refining their ability to think through material and design choices. As students delve deeper into materiality, the Material Integration 1 module provides them with a strong understanding of various materials and how they apply to interior architecture. Alongside the technical aspects of design, the Mental Wealth: Professional Life 1 module helps students recognize the importance of psychological and physical factors in professional development. Students begin to assess their strengths and areas for improvement, fostering the skills needed for success in the design industry.Year 2 builds on the foundation set in the first year, with a greater focus on user needs, site context, and material application. The curriculum challenges students to refine their design skills by encouraging them to investigate site-specific factors, apply material knowledge, and address social, environmental, and technological issues. Key modules such as Design Investigation 2 and Design Resolution 2 push students to expand their understanding of design by requiring them to think critically about how to balance aesthetics with functionality in real-world contexts.
