COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Filmmaking course offers a well-rounded education that blends practical production skills with theoretical insight, preparing students for diverse roles within the film and media industries. From the very beginning, students work hands-on with both traditional and digital formats, including rare opportunities to shoot on 16mm film, which sets the course apart in today’s video-dominated landscape. Across three years, the program is built on three main pillars: film history, film theory, and film practice. In the first year, students are introduced to key skills by making short documentaries and fiction films while analysing classic and contemporary cinema, particularly the evolution of Hollywood. Modules like Creative Content and Media Cultures help students explore storytelling across platforms and build critical thinking. As they move into the second year, students refine their media production techniques and deepen their critical understanding through modules such as Production Lab 2, Advanced Storytelling, and Critical Theory. Internships and study abroad options further enhance their industry readiness. The third year focuses on professional development and career preparation, with students undertaking a major final project—either a creative production or a written dissertation. Modules such as Professional Practice and Mental Wealth: Agency 3 provide real-world freelancing experience through UEL Creatives. Optional modules allow students to explore genres like horror and sci-fi, or innovate through transmedia storytelling and mobile media. The course is rich with opportunities to collaborate with industry professionals and respond to live briefs, bridging the gap between university and employment. Whether students aim to become directors, editors, screenwriters, or media entrepreneurs, they graduate with a comprehensive toolkit and portfolio, equipped for jobs across film production, festival programming, journalism, or the wider creative industries.
