COURSE CURRICULUM

The Dance degree offers a rich and diverse curriculum designed to equip students with the technical, creative, and professional skills required for a sustainable career in the dance and creative industries. From the outset, students are immersed in a wide range of dance forms including hip-hop, African contemporary, bharata natyam, kathak, capoeira, club styles and more, fostering a well-rounded understanding of global dance cultures. In early core modules like Learning Dance Practices and Healthier Dancer, students build kinesthetic awareness and physical preparedness through practical training and knowledge of anatomy, nutrition and safe practice. Choreography and Dancing Cultures introduces tools for performance-making and individual movement identity, while Performance Making and Mental Wealth modules support the development of acting, collaboration and reflective practice. In year two, students expand their movement vocabulary with advanced dance practices, hybrid forms and Screendance, merging digital technologies with choreography. Technique modules continue to strengthen core skills, while projects promote experimentation and personal voice. Students engage with professional practice and career planning through tailored workshops and opportunities for creative collaboration, preparing them for industry demands. In the final year, students take part in live performance projects, refine their research and choreography through independently-led work, and complete a placement with leading dance organisations such as East London Dance or Breakin’ Convention. Modules such as Mental Wealth: Enterprise and Engagement prepare students for leadership, entrepreneurship and producing, offering real-world experience through managing live events and mentoring peers. Across the program, the focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural context and community engagement ensures students graduate as versatile and socially aware artists. Whether pursuing careers in choreography, performance, dance education, film, or arts production, students leave prepared to make a meaningful impact in today’s evolving dance landscape.
