COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology and Law course provides a comprehensive academic foundation that integrates the study of legal systems with a deep understanding of crime and criminal justice. In the first year, students develop core knowledge of law and its role in society, exploring foundational concepts through modules like Legal Skills, Introduction to Crime and Punishment, and the Criminal Justice Process. The course also includes "Mental Wealth" modules, which focus on professional development and reflective learning. Students examine how laws are formed and applied, analyze the English legal system, and explore the social construction of crime, media influence, and the treatment of offenders. As students progress to the second year, they delve deeper into criminal law, human rights, and crime in a social-historical context, gaining insights into how political, economic, and cultural factors shape justice systems. Modules such as Crime Policy into Practice and Policing and Society further enhance critical thinking about law enforcement and public policy. By the final year, students engage in an independently researched project and select from over 20 optional modules, including topics like Cybercrime, Youth Crime, Human Rights, Medical Ethics, and Islamic Law. These modules allow students to tailor their learning to personal interests or career goals. The curriculum combines theoretical and practical learning, with options such as Clinical Legal Education and Work-Based Learning to build hands-on experience. Ethical awareness and professional standards are emphasized throughout, especially in modules focused on legal ethics and leadership.
