COURSE CURRICULUM

The course is structured into three terms, each focusing on key areas of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and creative technologies.In Term One, students begin with Fundamentals of HCI, introducing them to the field of Human-Computer Interaction. Topics include cognition, emotion, design process, conceptual models, interface metaphors, requirements engineering, and evaluation methods, with a focus on the role of UX designers in agile software development teams. In Research Methods for Creative Technologies, students learn theoretical research methods and industry practices for evaluating interactive applications, developing qualitative methodologies for assessing user experiences. This unit helps students critically analyze and reflect on interactive experiences through written and verbal assessments.In Term Two, State of the Art is split into two areas: qualitative and quantitative research, and a theoretical survey of the HCI field. Students explore key thinkers and engage with practical hands-on projects involving microcontroller and Arduino, culminating in the development of a physical computing prototype based on a defined research methodology. HCI Lab is a studio-based unit that offers a space for exploration and experimentation with participatory design methods, as well as a collaborative professional practice project with external community partners, where students work on an industry brief in groups.In Term Three, the focus shifts to the Final Major Project, which serves as a culmination of the skills, knowledge, and creativity developed throughout the course. Students work on a project that reflects their personal interests and goals as HCI specialists, either continuing work from previous units or starting a new proposal. The project is accompanied by a showreel of mini-projects and prototypes, and the course concludes with an exhibition showcasing the students' work.
