COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first term of the course, you will be introduced to the university, its technical workshops, and available facilities. You’ll engage in a range of lectures and seminars to begin exploring your creative practice. Launch week will focus on collaborative work through a series of workshops to prepare you for your studies. The Craft of Filmmaking unit covers essential skills in producing, directing, camera, lighting, sound, editing, and post-production. You will demonstrate your knowledge through practical work and a final short film project. Additionally, depending on your pathway choice, you can opt for units in Screenwriting, Cinematography, or Directing, where you’ll develop key skills in scriptwriting, visual storytelling, or directing techniques.In the second term, you’ll start developing your MA project, refining and testing the aims of your proposal. The Opportunity Week includes the 48-hour Film Challenge, a competition where you will work in teams to write, shoot, and edit a short film in just 48 hours, presenting it for a panel of judges. The Film Production (non-fiction and fiction) unit will teach you about managing production roles, budgeting, scheduling, and the technical aspects of filmmaking, including risk assessment and health and safety. Optional units such as Producing, Editing and Post-Production, and Sound Design provide in-depth exploration of various production processes, from legal and financial considerations to the technical aspects of editing and sound.In the third term, you’ll apply your research and knowledge to your Final Major Project, where you’ll work in teams to conceptualize, research, develop, and produce a short film or feature-length screenplay. This intensive project will cover all stages of production, leading to a final screening and presentation of your work.
