COURSE CURRICULUM
In Term One, the course begins with Launch, an intensive week designed to help students prepare for their studies. During this week, students engage in various activities, including a guest lecture super session, an all-staff Pecha Kucha presentation, walking orientation tours around Canterbury and its surroundings, and a collaborative making project in the studio. The Experimentation and Innovation unit provides opportunities for students to explore new design perspectives, analytical techniques, and production methods, expanding their critical framework for future units. The Research and Professional Contexts 1 unit focuses on developing advanced research skills, conceptual understanding, and analytical techniques, positioning students within the contextual foundations of their discipline. Opportunity Week follows, an intensive week of activities in collaboration with external partners, exploring topics outside students' primary subject areas such as politics, economics, business, culture, or philosophy. In Term Two, Studio Practice extends students' research and development from Term One, acting as a design accelerator. In this unit, students collaborate with their specialist tutor to formulate a research and project proposal, setting the stage for their comprehensive project that demonstrates growing mastery of their practice. Research and Professional Contexts 2 further builds on students' research and communication skills through two components: a contextual practice presentation and a collaborative practice project. The contextual presentation supports individual project development, demonstrating students' ability to situate their work within a broader field. The collaborative practice project allows students to work on a collectively defined brief with others, enhancing teamwork and practical skills. In Term Three, Final Realisation serves as the culmination of the Master's course. This unit integrates all prior research, experimentation, concept development, and contextual analysis into a focused final outcome. The project is a natural progression of the work started in Studio Practice, concluding with the dissemination of students' work to external audiences, marking the end of their academic journey.
