COURSE CURRICULUM

Term one begins with Launch, an intensive week designed to help you orient yourself and get to know your course staff, peers, and the school community. Activities include a multi-story guest lecture super session, an all-staff PechaKucha, walking tours of Canterbury and the surroundings, and a collaborative studio launch project. In the Experimentation and Innovation unit, you'll have the chance to explore new perspectives on design, analytical techniques, and production methods, setting a critical framework for the units ahead. Research and Professional Contexts 1 aims to develop your advanced research, analysis, and conceptual understanding, helping position you within the historical and future context of your discipline.Term two introduces Opportunity Week, an intensive, external collaboration week, often covering subjects outside your immediate discipline, such as politics, economics, culture, or philosophy. Studio Practice extends the research and development from term one, acting as a design accelerator. In collaboration with your tutor, you'll formulate a research and project proposal, which will guide the rest of your studies. This unit is fast-paced and productive, aiming for a sophisticated project that demonstrates your growing mastery. Research and Professional Contexts 2 builds on your skills in research, critical analysis, and communication. It includes a contextual practice presentation that shows your ability to situate your work in the broader field, along with a collaborative practice project where you work with others on a collectively defined brief.Term three culminates in Final Realisation, where you bring together all your research, experimentation, and conceptual work into a focused, synoptic outcome. This project is a continuation of the work you began in Studio Practice and includes the dissemination of your final results to external audiences.
