COURSE CURRICULUM

In Term One, you begin by exploring the basics of screen acting through Screen Acting 1, where you familiarize yourself with being on camera and develop various acting techniques, including presenting, radio/TV drama, voice-over, and podcasting. You’ll practice using "soundbite culture" central to social media broadcasting and influencing, learning how to tell stories through television and podcast formats. You’ll also gain experience working with multiple cameras, particularly in the context of TV drama. Alongside this, the Acting Skills unit delves into character development through workshops and exercises, focusing on practitioners like Stanislavsky, Demidov, Hagen, and Strasberg. In Term Two, Screen Acting 2 builds upon the skills acquired in Term One. This unit encourages you to reflect on your acting knowledge, enhancing your approach to character, text, and techniques. A key component of this term is learning contemporary practices in staging intimacy and working with sensitive storylines involving intimacy or touch. You will gain valuable insight into how consent, intimacy, and power dynamics play a role in performance, emphasizing trauma-informed and consent-forward practices for both cast and crew. Additionally, Practice as Research for Digital Performance introduces you to research resources and methods, encouraging you to explore how technology has evolved the role of the actor. You’ll critically examine digital performance spaces, history, and cultural contexts, creating innovative content for these platforms while collaborating with students from other disciplines to develop a portfolio. In Term Three, the Final Major Project and Professional Practice serves as the culmination of your studies. You will conceptualize, pitch, and deliver an original screen project that reflects the skills and knowledge developed throughout the course. This project not only showcases your professional practice but also helps enhance your industry presence. You’ll also focus on career development, refining your online profile, researching potential employers or collaborators, and preparing for future career opportunities or further studies.
