COURSE CURRICULUM
In Year One, students are introduced to the course and the campus during Launch Week, where they engage in collaborative projects. The "What is Visual Communication?" unit encourages experimental exploration and introduces students to research methodologies, communication skills, and image-making tools. "Equality, Diversity and Inclusion 1" offers an exploration of social identities and their implications on creative practice, emphasizing inclusion and exclusion. Through "Defining Your Practice," students investigate various themes and approaches within contemporary visual communication. "Opportunity" enables exploration through field visits to galleries, museums, and cultural institutions, both nationally and internationally. The "Practice-based Fundamentals" unit focuses on constructing meaning through image-making across different mediums. In "Preparing for Professional Practice: Part 1," students consider their future roles in professional environments. The year concludes with "Individual Reflection and Progression," where students reflect on their work, create a portfolio, and define their future practice.Year Two starts with another Launch Week and an externally set brief for a collaborative project exploring global issues. In "Visual Storytelling," students develop their personal voice and learn to communicate complex ideas to specific audiences using traditional and emerging media. The "Conscious Practitioner" unit promotes progressive values and explores global influences, encouraging students to reflect on how beliefs shape practices. "Interdisciplinary Electives" offer the chance to collaborate across disciplines, enhancing creative responses. "Opportunity" again provides exposure through field visits. "Spatial Practices" focuses on creating identities and experiences within physical and virtual spaces. "Preparing for Professional Practice: Part 2" supports research and industry-focused analysis, culminating in a placement or an Industry Case Study. In Year Three, students refine their ideas during "Launch" and continue with "Critical Research and Practice," a self-directed project that guides their professional work. "Professional Practices" explores future definitions of creative careers in visual communication. "Opportunity" offers further exposure to the industry through field visits. Finally, students embark on the "Self-Directed Final Major Project," a comprehensive project of their own design, demonstrating maturity in their conceptual, technical, aesthetic, and theoretical work.
