COURSE CURRICULUM

The film course is structured over three years, providing both practical and theoretical learning opportunities in filmmaking. In Year One, students begin with foundational units such as Narrative Fundamentals, where they explore key stages of script development, including story discovery, screenwriting, and editing. The Production Fundamentals unit covers the entire production workflow, including pre-production, production, and post-production, along with hands-on experience in camera and sound operations. Scripted Production allows students to develop and produce a short scripted film using contemporary industry practices, while the Unscripted Film Proposal unit introduces the principles of unscripted film production, culminating in the creation of a proposal for a short unscripted film.In Year Two, students build on their skills with units like Major Scripted Production, where they take responsibility for a crew role in the production of a short film, deepening their understanding of filmmaking processes. The Professional Development Portfolio unit encourages students to reflect on their progress, develop their CV, and explore potential career paths. Unscripted Production gives students the opportunity to experiment with unscripted film forms, pushing creative boundaries. Additionally, the Extended Essay/Video Essay unit focuses on critical thinking and research, with students investigating an individually negotiated topic.Year Three emphasizes the transition to professional practice. The Pre-production Pack prepares students for their Final Film Project by building their technical and collaborative skills. The Business of Production unit equips students with essential business and management skills for the film industry. Finally, the Final Film Project allows students to apply their learning in a comprehensive production, leading to a final screening of their work. This year provides an opportunity to work at a highly creative and professional standard, marking the culmination of their filmmaking education.
