In Year one, you’ll be introduced to the history, theories, and creative techniques of body art, including tattooing, body modification, and transhuman enhancement. The year begins with Body Art Modes, where you explore the diverse possibilities of body art, including performance, photography, and activism. Body Art Techniques focuses on technical skills like drawing, digital imaging, and non-invasive tattoo methods. The practical unit Body Art Practices emphasizes experimentation with tattooing, body modification, casting, photography, and performance. You’ll also study the Body Art Histories unit, which traces the historical development of body art from ancient rituals to modern practices. In Year two, you’ll delve deeper into ancient tribal practices and advanced body art techniques. The Body Art Ethics and Aesthetics unit challenges you to think critically about ethical issues like consent, cultural appropriation, and the psychological effects of body modification. In Professional Context, you’ll learn how to navigate career pathways in the creative sector, while Body Art: Identity, Society, and Culture explores how body art shapes individual and collective identities. You’ll also undertake a Creative Project, where you’ll focus on the entire creative process, from ideation to execution. In Year three, you’ll focus on preparing for your career with the Body Art Research unit, where you’ll explore an area of interest within body art through creative practice. New Horizons helps you understand the creative industries and position yourself professionally. Finally, the Major Project allows you to develop an independent body of work, whether through tattooing, performance, or other body-based practices, managing the creative process from conception to final presentation.
