COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year, you will be introduced to contemporary art studio methodologies through the Contemporary Practice Toolkit module, which emphasizes discovery through making. You'll engage in a series of conceptual briefs to assess your prior knowledge and to encourage more independent, self-guided practices. The Thinking Contemporary Art module connects studio practice with broader issues, helping you understand the current state of fine art discourse. Workshops will explore art as a collection of forms, concepts, and creative methods addressing personal, ideological, socio-political, environmental, and cultural questions. In the Initiating Practice module, you'll begin to evaluate your individual art practice, focusing on translating concepts into art and building communities within your cohort. The Art in Context module will explore how art is shaped by cultural, historical, and social contexts, questioning why we make art and how it interacts with larger societal dynamics such as gender, ethnicity, and class. In the second year, the Developing Practice module challenges you to evaluate and refine your creative methods, broadening your skills through experimentation and critical inquiry. Making Communities encourages you to apply your skills to community-focused projects, linking theoretical discussions to real-world practices. The Expanding Practices module promotes research-driven and interdisciplinary approaches, encouraging you to explore public-facing opportunities for your work. In Making Public, you will focus on creating and presenting work for public audiences, engaging with exhibition-making and community engagement. In the final year, the Practice as Research module focuses on independent research to inform and innovate your creative practice. You'll critically connect theory and practice and apply advanced research methodologies. The Contemporary Platforms module helps you design your professional future, preparing for exhibitions, publications, or workshops. The Consolidating Practice module is the culmination of your studies, where you will create a significant body of work, culminating in a public presentation or exhibition, demonstrating your artistic vision and professional readiness for future creative challenges.
