COURSE CURRICULUM
In Year one, the course begins with Launch Week, where you'll be introduced to the term, review your summer project, and engage in research visits alongside Jewellery and Silversmithing students. You will explore making techniques and materials in the studio, enhancing your skills in visual and contextual research. The unit Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion 1 encourages critical thinking around the themes of otherness, belonging, and inclusivity in the craft industries. You’ll also engage with 2D CAD software, such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, to understand the role of digital technology in design and production. In Form and Surface, you’ll learn various production methods, including casting and mould-making. Professional Communication will prepare you for self-promotion and help you understand the professional landscape of the craft industry. You will also study 3D CAD software, expanding your digital design skills, and engage in ATOM activities that broaden your creative horizons through interdisciplinary learning. PLE Digital Outcomes involves documenting your digital media presence.Year two begins with Launch Week, reviewing summer work and preparing for placement or industry-focused projects. In Body, Object, Space, you’ll explore how the relationship between body, object, and space informs your work. The Conscious Practitioner continues the focus on inclusivity and diversity, building ethical visual and textual languages. Sustainability will challenge your approach to materials and processes in design. Audience and Context allows you to define your identity as a ceramicist or glassmaker. You’ll also complete an External Context unit through a placement, internship, or live project, keeping an online reflective journal. Exhibiting will provide hands-on experience in curating and presenting a group exhibition.In Year three, Launch Week marks the beginning of your final year with a focus on project planning and professional practice. The Minor Project: Exploratory Research and Development allows for in-depth research and testing in a self-negotiated project. Professional Practice will prepare you for a career post-graduation, covering self-promotion, employment, or further study. Your Major Project: Realisation will involve creating a self-initiated, professional piece that reflects your individual potential, ready for public exhibition or industry focus.
