COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, the course begins with Launch Week, an intensive introduction to the academic journey, where students engage with peers and staff to set study objectives. Projects 01 explores the relationship between the body and the built environment through the design of a spatial enclosure, addressing shelter and basic needs. The Constructing for Equity 01 unit covers the technological principles, civil regulations, and societal challenges shaping contemporary building construction, focusing on social justice, equitable space, and the climate crisis. Briefs and Positions 01 requires the preparation of briefing materials for a design proposal in Design 02, emphasizing creative speculation, site analysis, and cultural research. Opportunity Week offers collaborative activities with external partners to broaden knowledge and skills. Projects 02 builds on the previous brief to create a small building design that repurposes an underused structure for multi-use purposes. Critical Analysis 01 examines the role of architects within the context of spatial and object design practice, informed by history and theory. The Material and Digital Practices unit introduces representation theories and core practices in designing small-scale objects. ATOM activities provide interdisciplinary exposure, allowing personal exploration of interests. In Year 2, Launch Week reorients students after the summer break. Project 03 focuses on designing architectural interventions within landscapes, considering human impact, ecologies, and strategies of care. Constructing for Equity 02 deepens understanding of construction principles, examining non-western and vernacular building practices for low-carbon solutions. Briefs & Positions 02 prepares students for a medium-scale design proposal through studio speculation, site analysis, and critical research. Opportunity Week again involves collaboration with external partners. Projects 04 challenges students to complete a medium-scale building design, addressing complex functions, environmental and social concerns. Pathways and Mentors encourages reflection on design skills and potential career paths, with mentoring from professionals. Critical Analysis 02 advances theoretical engagement with design ideas and their wider connections. ATOM activities continue, promoting interdisciplinary learning. In Year 3, Launch Week prepares students for their final year. Projects 05 includes a housing scheme portfolio and report, addressing design, legal, and procedural aspects of architectural practice. Critical Analysis 03 involves self-directed research on a topic related to the course's historical and theoretical concerns. Briefs and Positions 03 focuses on preparing materials for a medium-scale design proposal for the Final Major Project, considering spatial and material networks. Opportunity Week concludes the academic experience with collaboration with external partners. Projects 06 is the final unit, where students complete a large building design that addresses topography, local and political issues, and regional objectives, impacting the lives of individuals.
