COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year One, the course begins with a Launch week where you'll be introduced to the term, review your summer project, and engage in activities with students from other programs, including research visits and cross-program collaboration. The Maker and Materials unit helps you build confidence in the studio, emphasizing visual and contextual research and the act of making through various materials and processes. You'll explore Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion to critically analyze industry practices and challenge established cultural values. The 2D CAD Cam unit introduces essential digital tools like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, laying the foundation for design and production processes. During the Opportunity week, you'll gain further exposure to the term's activities and collaborate with Ceramics & Glass students. In Form and Surface, you'll learn production methods like mould-making and casting. Professional Communication will help you understand self-promotion within the context of the crafts industry. The 3D CAD Cam unit builds on your digital skills, focusing on 3D design applications. ATOM Activities offer cross-disciplinary learning across UCA, and the PLE Digital Outcomes serve as a record of your engagement with digital platforms.Year Two builds on these foundations with a Launch week focused on project planning, placement preparation, and peer group engagement. The Body, Object, Space unit explores how the relationship between body, space, and object informs your practice, while The Conscious Practitioner deepens your understanding of inclusivity in design. The Sustainability unit addresses material sourcing and its environmental impact. You’ll also undertake an External Context project, choosing an industry placement or live project to apply your learning. In your final year, Minor Projects and Professional Practice prepare you for the industry. The Major Project culminates in a self-initiated work reflecting your individual practice, ready for public exhibition.
