COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year One, the focus is on developing foundational skills and understanding in illustration. The launch introduces students to the course, staff, and campus resources, followed by activities to bond the group and introduce image-making contexts. In Fundamentals 1, students learn the basics of illustration, including conveying information visually. Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity 1 explores socio-political issues and the global context of illustration. Impact 1 introduces the reach and impact of images, while the Opportunity week allows students to reflect on their progress and engage in live challenges. Fundamentals 2 builds on the basics, introducing experimental practices and larger-scale projects. Real World 1 prepares students for professional practice in the creative industry, and Showtime challenges students to showcase their work in public events.Year Two begins with a launch that sets the stage for the year, including specialist options such as narrative, moving image, and data visualization. Studio 1 expands on core illustration skills, while The Conscious Practitioner encourages critical analysis of visual culture beyond Eurocentric perspectives. Impact 2 explores new ways to engage audiences with imagery. Opportunity week continues with live challenges and theme exploration. Studio 2 focuses on personal visual inquiries, and Real World 2 prepares students for work placements by building portfolios. The Placement unit develops employability and enterprise skills, while students can choose from elective units, such as Impact 2 and Typographic Studies 2.0.Year Three starts with a launch to refine visual voice and professional profiles. Visual Voice allows students to present a coherent body of work through various briefs. Critical Practice encourages deep research into a chosen theme. Opportunity week prepares students for the transition into the workplace. The Final Project provides an opportunity for self-determined exploration, with work showcased in the Degree Show and contributing to students' portfolios.
