ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University for the Creative Arts (UCA) is a specialist art and design university located in Southern England, established through a series of mergers of art schools with rich histories dating back to the 19th century. The institution’s origins trace to the founding of Guildford School of Art in 1856 and Maidstone College of Art in 1867, followed by other notable schools such as Canterbury College of Art, Medway College of Design, and Epsom School of Art & Design. These independent schools eventually merged throughout the 20th century, leading to the creation of the Kent Institute of Art & Design in 1987 and the Surrey Institute of Art & Design in 1995. In 1999, the Surrey Institute received University College status from the Privy Council. A major turning point came in 2005 when both institutes merged to form the University College for the Creative Arts at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone, and Rochester. In 2008, the institution was granted full university status and officially became the University for the Creative Arts. Since then, UCA has continued to evolve, merging with the Open College of the Arts in 2016 to expand its distance learning opportunities. UCA has also taken significant steps internationally, partnering with Xiamen University in China to open the Institute of Creativity and Innovation in 2020. Today, UCA is recognized for its commitment to arts education, offering a wide range of creative courses and maintaining its legacy as a hub for nurturing artistic talent across disciplines such as design, fine art, fashion, film, and architecture.
