COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mental Health Nursing BSc (Hons) degree equips students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to become compassionate, competent mental health nurses. Across the three years of study, students develop a strong foundation in both the theoretical and applied aspects of nursing, preparing them to deliver safe, person-centred care in a variety of healthcare settings. In the first year, students focus on the fundamentals of nursing practice, including assessing, planning, providing, and evaluating care, alongside essential skills in literacy, numeracy, technology, and scientific principles. This year also introduces the context of nursing and practical experience through Nursing Practice Part 1. The second year builds on this foundation, with modules exploring acute care in mental health, long-term mental health conditions, and person-centred approaches, alongside further practical experience through Nursing Practice Part 2. In the final year, students consolidate their learning with advanced modules such as Evidence-Based Practice through a service improvement project, Nursing Practice Part 3, and preparation for professional practice in complex care environments. The program integrates extensive clinical placements, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, develop critical thinking, and enhance practical skills. On graduation, students are prepared to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as qualified mental health nurses, ready to make a meaningful impact in diverse healthcare contexts.
