COURSE CURRICULUM

The Cyber Security BSc (Hons) degree at University College Birmingham provides a comprehensive and structured pathway for students to develop the technical expertise and practical experience required for a career in cyber security. In the first year, students build a strong foundation with modules covering cyber security fundamentals, computer systems, networks and communication, object-oriented programming, secure systems analysis and design, and professional issues in cyber security. These core modules establish the knowledge and skills needed to understand threats, systems, and security practices. The second year deepens technical competencies through modules such as cyber forensics, ethical hacking, securing networks, database technology, dynamic web development, and research methods for cyber security, providing both theoretical understanding and hands-on application. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional work placement, gaining valuable real-world industry experience. In the final year, the course focuses on advanced topics and emerging challenges in cyber security, including artificial intelligence in cyber security, cyber security incident management, secure programming, and cyber security trends. The capstone individual project allows students to apply their knowledge to a substantial, independent research or development project, consolidating their learning and preparing them for careers such as cyber security analyst, secure software developer, network security administrator, and other specialist roles in this high-demand sector.
